During February of 2020, a video I had posted a month prior went viral on Tik Tok. It was my first viral video and increased my follower count by 3000. While this success was just a random boost by the algorithm, I did not take it for granted. Experimenting with my new audience,  I was able to capitalize and steadily grow my account. I played with my love for music and started getting into audio remixing.

 

Using the surge in popularity surrounding politics and my skill in music editing, I made two different remixes featuring the voices of prominent female politicians and popular hip hop songs. In doing this, I saw a spike in activity on my page as the remixes took on a life of their own. (read more about the popularity of the remixes here)

The success of these audios helped me make high profile mutual connections that I still maintain almost two years later. Part of the nature of Tik Tok is understanding your audience and what they want from you. This concept is often referred to as finding your “niche”. Tik Tok’s algorithm will then continue to push your videos out to audiences that had a previous positive reaction. This is the sweet spot where accounts see massive growth. My account has ebbed and flowed through various niches in its life. Consistent through it all is growth and engagement.

 

My account also provides a fantastic example of my talent as a personality in front of the camera, and not always behind it. My biggest strength is editing, where I can show off the uniqueness in my rhythm and my keen, detail oriented eye. But, my videos on Tik Tok offer great insight into my other strengths: confidence, humor, and personal branding. While my personal account is not something that’s necessarily a “professional” asset, I think my success showcases my ability to adapt to trends, cater to an audience and drive results.
